The Albert Ellis Institute is pleased to announce our 60th year of being incorporated as a nonprofit organization! Proceeds from this event will contribute to the Albert Ellis Institute’s outreach, advocacy, prevention and intervention for individuals in need of psychological services who may not otherwise have access.

Please join us in celebrating this event on Monday, May 13, 2019, from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm at The Albert Ellis Institute, 145 East 32nd Street, 9th Floor, New York, NY 10016. There will be a raffle as well as a live auction of various items and live entertainment by a professional comedian who personally knew Albert Ellis. This is also an opportunity to reconnect with old friends and colleagues and tour the new Institute. Hors d’oeuvres and drinks will be served.

Anxiety disorders are among the most frequently diagnosed class of disorders in adolescents. Anxiety can interfere with numerous areas of functioning among adolescents including peer and family relations, academic performance, and engagement in social activities. Fortunately, many highly effective, evidence-based interventions are available to practitioners working with this population. During this workshop, participants will learn how to identify symptoms of anxiety and how they manifest in an adolescent population with strong emphasis on developmental factors. Common activating events for adolescent anxiety will be reviewed and participants will learn how to tailor specific strategies based on Rational-Emotive and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (RE&CBT) effectively to treat anxiety in adolescents. Methods to build a strong therapeutic alliance and to enhance motivation and engagement in treatment will also be addressed.

Suicide has been a significant public health crisis for a long time and it is still surrounded by limited public awareness and understanding. Furthermore, existing literature suggests that several factors are involved in understanding a suicide attempt and subsequent treatment. This presentation will critically explore some of the main theories of suicide. The mainstream research in the field of suicidology, including the main contributions of quantitative as well as qualitative research will be addressed. Special attention to the practice of school-based suicide prevention programs for youth and adolescents and how the field went from a “stress model” approach to a “psychopathology” approach will be reviewed. Other areas of discussion will include high-risk suicidal thinking in terms of subjective versus objective attitude; utilizing a collaborative approach; identifying verbal versus nonverbal communication when assessing clients at high-risk for suicide; the importance of instilling hope and addressing ambivalence and understanding hesitation; the role the environment plays; the delay-discounting process; structured versus unstructured assessment; a one size fits all versus a client-centered assessment approach; assessing acute versus chronic suicide; and treatment strategies. A model of a “Suicide Domino Effect” will be presented to integrate these factors within a RE & CBT perspective. Participants are encouraged to come prepared with clinical cases for role-plays and discussions.

In this intense three day practicum, participants will learn the Rational-Emotive & Cognitive Behavior theory of emotional disturbance and change by leading REBT practitioners. Strategies for identifying and challenging clients’ dysfunctional beliefs and constructing more adaptive beliefs, emotions and behaviors will be a focus of the weekend. REBT’s conceptualization of emotions and Common Errors new REBT therapists make will also be presented. Participants will have the opportunity to practice their RE & CBT skills in small group supervision and receive immediate feedback from an experienced certified REBT supervisor.
