What causes disturbed feelings?

I reckon that most people believe that when they are upset, it is some negative, external event has caused the disturbed feelings.
REBT takes a radical departure form this seemingly obvious and intuitively correct belief.

What is it that you believe cause your disturbed feelings when you are upset?
Why does REBT take a different position on this? What does this imply for our emotional and psychological health?
