Acceptance is one of those concepts that means different things to different people. It can be nuanced and layered and the meaning can shift depending upon the context.
Imagining someone sitting on his or her tuffet meditating may seem the perfect picture of acceptance. And it is, or it can be. On the other hand, imagining someone combatting his or her irrational beliefs and distorted thinking may seem just the opposite of acceptance. However, as I often point out, acceptance is the soft underbelly of REBT because after you are done disputing ‘A’ MUST NOT BE ‘A’, what are you left with?
You are left with ‘A’ IS ‘A.’ . . . and that’s acceptance, baby!
