After suffering a heart attack, Daniel Dennett, American philosopher, writer and cognitive scientist “Thank goodness I’m alive!”

Daniel Dennett is an American philosopher, writer, and cognitive scientist whose research centers on the philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, and philosophy of biology, a “new atheist”, one of the so called “The Four Horsemen.” Prof. Dennett was invited to the 2006 meeting of the “Beyond Belief: Science, Religion, Reason and Survival” conference, but just a week before it started he suffered a heart attack. After a few days of recovery he wrote a letter to be read at the conference. This is the video of Paul Churchland reading that Dan’s letter.

For more than three decades, almost from its inception, the field of Cognitive Behavior Therapy has been taking a turn toward and embracing various aspects of mindfulness meditation, mindfulness practices and mindful living such as the development of MBCBT / Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy, ACT and others. REBT-CBT relates to mindfulness, and mindfulness relates to gratitude and acceptance.   In his letter (as read by Paul Churchland) Prof. Dennett expresses gratitude and acceptance in as lovely and profound a way as I have rarely heard. Not too shabby for a card-carrying atheist, especially one that looks surprisingly like Santa Claus!  😉

Please watch and enjoy the video and then tell us what you think.
