What does REBT say about the unconscious mind?

Posted by Rex Alexander on Fri 30 Jan 26 in REBT & Other therapies compared with Comments closed |

Q: A reader asks: What does the theory of REBT say about the unconscious mind?

A: Good question! You cannot talk about the “unconscious” without talking a little about Sigmund Freud.  Freud was the first to present the idea of the unconscious or subconscious . . .

Kumare, Scoundrel or Liberator ???

This is more about rational thinking in the larger sense than REBT per se. It illustrates in the most scandalous and amazing way human beings profound tendency to think, emote and  behave gullibly, credulously and superstitiously. As Dr. Ellis ‘demurely’ said, “Humans are out of their fucking minds!”

It’s a big, complex subject, but understanding something about Cognitive Biases is the next step in your understanding of Cognitive Psychology, and by extension, your application of REBT-CBT. Wikipedia lists more than 120 of them! It is an unmanageable chunk of information to assimilate, but this great little book by Charles Holm sifts this list for the most significant 25, and presents them in simple, easy-to-understand language
